Another FUN day!

Happy Thursday...(I can remember that because it's my TRASH DAY)!! But boy what a morning. I got up ready to go, emptied the trash into the big bin and...drove down the street, phone was not syncing in the car...maybe because I didn't have it with me! (I can't live without the phone. What will I use to video?) So I turned around, got the phone and started off. Halfway down the street I remembered...NOT only do I need to empty the trash into the bin BUT I have to take the bin to the street...so back home I went! By this time my Beansli is barking up a storm wondering what in the world was going on!

Mrs. Wishy Washy
We listened to this "old" favorite again! We talked about how books do become our favorites and we like to read them over and over again. That's what good readers do!  We had to retell (act it out of course!)
Today the actors actually did some of the talking!!! YAY...feeling more comfortable.  In our response journal we wrote about our favorite Mrs. Wishy Washy character.  We talked about responding with use of the text.  It's great to say, "My favorite character is the cow."  But that doesn't tell the reader much about that character so giving examples from the text is a good way to do that!  "My favorite Mrs. Wishy Washy character is the pig.  I like pigs and that they ROLL IN THE MUD!" I know that this little can talk about this story because she used phrases from the story!

All three of these are great examples!  The first one uses the phrase from the book.  The second has a wonderful illustration to go along with her writing and the last one...I love the use of dialogue from the book. "Oh, lovely mud!"

Reader's Workshop
First we created an anchor chart to help us remember what reader's workshop looks like and sounds like.  And off we went!
STAMINA: We read for 5 minutes today!!!
This helps us to stay organized...the sticker says "Time to reread."
We pile our books on top of that sticker...these are the books that I will be reading during reader's workshop.
After I've read my book I move it over to the green side...when I get to the label it reminds me ...
Time to reread!
Writer's Workshop
Today we talked more about tools that a writer needs...I we came up with the standard: pencil and paper...But what else??? Did you ever think of these things?
Wow!!! Guess what? We are all equipped to be GREAT, AMAZING writers!!!

Today in math we broke out the rekenreks again! This time we used them to solve some Double-Decker Bus problems!

First we needed to talk about WHAT the problem was asking...was she counting passengers (people who ride along) or people on the bus?  We decided the driver was not a passenger since he is always on the bus!  Understanding the vocabulary and what exactly we are trying to figure out is ALWAYS important during our problem solving!
She told us she saw 5 people on the top deck and 4 people on the bottom deck. But she didn't have time to count them all because the bus drove by quickly!
We used our Rekenrek to put "5 passengers" on the top deck and 4 on the bottom deck.. and this is what it looked like.  Like the little girl in the story who knows 5 and 5 is 10 and 4 is one less than 5 so it must be one less than 10 passengers! We were RIGHT!!!

Have a great evening talking FIRST GRADE with your little!

Love,
Ms. Guy
