Wednesday that felt like...

Thursday!  Why does that always happen to me on short weeks...now it feels like it's going to be a LONG week! hmmmm? But I'm not the only one who's confused! Mrs. Barcena took her kids to music and we had to kick them OUTTA THERE!

Okay, so today was our first day of "extra specials"!  Every other week from 8-9am my littles will be hanging out in specials...This allows for the first grade teachers to have some time together for some much needed collaborative planning.  (boy does that hour FLY by!) Thanks to the specials teachers for "giving" us this time.

Spelling words: I, like, the, am, is
Today we added like  and the to our board...So now we are using I, am, like, the in sentences.  After looking at them and identifying them we used these words in sentences and then wrote sentences!

We talked about ways good readers think about books and what helps them remember them.  Today we talked about characters, setting and events...and created a story map of Mrs. Wishy Washy.
We watched Mrs. Wishy Washy by Joy Cowley

After watching we retold the story by acting it out... (the camera batteries died...I need to just use an "I"device...once I get them all charged of course!  I can't wait til I turn over the "data collection" to the littles!)

Then we completed a story map for our reader's response journal!

We decided to list them in the order that we were introduced to them...But we also talked about who might have been the MAIN character...Some said cow because she was the first animal introduced some said Mrs. Wishy Washy because that is the NAME OF THE BOOK after all! Some argued that they were all equally important.  I loved listening to them "debate"...Some were very persuasive and had people changing their minds!
I chose to share this one because I LOVED the fact that pictures were used.  We are at all different stages of writing and I want each to be successful at responding to a story they have read!  We wanted to make sure that we were very specific in our setting...We said, "outside, mmmm more specific please, on the farm mmmmm more specific please, in the MUD ahhhh YES! And was there any other place? Someone said inside...I was confused but come to find out they thought the TUB was inside! I LOVE the schema of  a first grader!  So, we talked a bit and decided in the tub was the second setting!

Then, of course, we talked about the events.  We talked about summarizing them into a beginning, middle and end!
and a completed story map! Whew...GREAT JOB littles!

We used the
(rekenreks) to make number sentences to ten.  Then off to TUBS!
Look at the thinking of this one!

Way TO GO...and again...I just wish there was a camera rolling...because the first time she make her observation it was just a PERFECT explanation and I just couldn't get her to say it in the EXACT same way...I loved the when she said, "Ms. Guy do you notice..." It just makes my heart HAPPY to hear them verbalize their thinking and learning!

Reflection:
I used my fingers for counting.
I used subitizing for recognizing a number REALLY FAST!
A word I should remember is rekenrek.
A word I should remember is sum.
I learned lots of ways to make ten.

This afternoon after science we had a little brain break fun!!!

What Did the Fox Say?

Pack up...Go home...and look what I found!
Well...there are LOTS of forgotten water bottles and a forgotten lunch box! OOOOPS...we are still working on the pack up routine! It gets kind of hectic in here! However, I am so impressed at the littles responsibility of knowing how they will get home!  And thanks to moms and dads for emailing me changes!  It is much easier for me to see it there than in the folder!! I don't always remember to look for that on the behavior page in the morning! So NOTES or EMAILS work best for me!

Have a wonderful evening!
Love,
Ms. Guy
